Marián Gutiérrez Urbaneta

Bilbao, 1969

She completed degree-level studies in Piano; Sol-Fa, Music Theory, Transposition and Accompaniment; Music Teaching; and Harmony, Counterpoint, Composition and Instrumentation at the Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga Conservatoire in Bilbao and the Jesús Guridi Conservatoire in Vitoria-Gasteiz. It was at the latter that she studied Composition with teachers Antonio Lauzurika, Zuriñe F. Gerenabarrena and Alfonso García de la Torre.

She also expanded her training in Composition, Orchestration and Musical Analysis in various seminars, courses and composition conferences with figures of international renown such as G. Crumb, S. Sciarrino, B. Ferneyhough, J. Harvey, S. Adler, C. Halffter, M. Sotelo, T. Hosokawa, M. Lavista, J.M. López López, B. Furrer, R. Lazkano, Ph. Hurel and T. Murail, among others.

As an educator, since 1990 she has taught at the María Bartau Music School in Castro Urdiales (Cantabria), the C.E.M. “Juan Antxieta” in Bilbao and the Jesús Guridi Conservatoire in Vitoria-Gasteiz, covering several subjects (Introductory Music, Piano, Instrumental Practice, Sol-Fa and Music Theory, Accompaniment, Harmony, Analysis and Foundations of Composition), while also working as a piano accompanist and, on several occasions, acting as Head of Department.

A Member of Musikagileak, the Basque-Navarra Association of Composers, she has received commissions to compose for various performers and groups, and her music has been performed in various countries and musical festivals: Bernaola International Festival (currently Bernaola Zikloa), the New Trends in Contemporary Music Cycle, the Electroacoustic Music Days, The Música con Clase Educational Music Cycle, the Principal’s Chamber Cycle (Vitoria-Gasteiz); the Musical Wednesdays Cycle (Monterrey, México); the Zinderend Laag Festival (Amsterdam, Netherlands); the Muziekbiennale-Konzert (Kleve, Alemania); the 2nd FAIC Season (Bilbao); Projecte Rafel Festival (Rafelbunyol); the OSE’s Matinées de Miramón Cycle (San Sebastián); the Guggenheim Museum’s TopARTE Programme (Bilbao); the Percursos Music Festival (Ponte de Lima, Portugal); the Musikagileak Contemporary Music Cycle (Basque Country); and the Badajoz Contemporary Music Cycle, among others.

The musicians who have performed her work include: Ainhoa Miranda (bass clarinet), Albert Nieto (piano), Lorena Paz Nieto (soprano), Juan Manuel Flores (violin), the Santa Lucía Guitar Quartet (Monterrey, Mexico), the Ciklus Ensemble (Basque Country), the Jesús Guridi Instrumental Group and the y Ensemble Sinkro (Vitoria-Gasteiz), the Musikusvie Ensemble (Amsterdam), the H.E.C. Quartet of the Euskadi Symphonic Orchestra and the Cuarto de Tono Collective.

She regularly receives the SGAE Foundation’s incentives for musical creation, as well as the Basque Government Department of Culture musical composition grant.

In 2018, her piece Arrhythmic Signal for violin was selected as semi-finalist and best work in Spain in the third Maurice Ravel International Composition Competition in the Live Small Groups category.

She has judged various composition competitions: the 34th SGAE-CNDM Young Composers Prize (2023) and the 15th, 16th and 17th Euskadi Young Musicians Prizes.

She is currently an officially qualified teacher at the Jesús Guridi Conservatoire in Vitoria-Gasteiz, where she teaches Musical Language and Auditive Education.
